Robert P. "Bob" Carmack died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at his home in Franklin, where he had lived for 53 years. He had fought a battle against a brain tumor for the last 10 months.
He was born Jan. 4, 1934, in Clay County, Tenn. His parents were Stone and Oval Carmack.
He married Joan Neat in 1958 at St. John's Catholic Church in Indianapolis. She survives.
They have four children, James Robert (Ann) Carmack of Elizabethtown, Ky., William Eric Carmack of Morgantown, Jo Ellen (Don) Ford of Nineveh and Jonathan Harold (Melanie) Carmack of Franklin; six grandchildren, Johnathan (Kristi) Carmack of New Castle, Stephen Carmack of Great Lakes, Ill., Adam and Jamie Ford, both of Nineveh, and Kyle and Cameron Carmack, both of Franklin; and three great-grandchildren Dylan, Jace and Jackson Carmack of New Castle.
Bob also is survived by a brother, Harold Carmack of Glasgow, Ky.; a sister, Betty Jane Upton of Celina, Tenn; three nieces; one nephew; one great-niece; three great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Glenn and Ray Carmack.
Bob retired from Rexham Corp. in Edinburgh. After his retirement, he worked as a security guard at the Arvin plant in Franklin. He also worked as a delivery truck driver for the Bread Thrift Shop in Franklin and Adessa Auto Auction in Taylorsville, and as a shuttle driver for Johnson Memorial Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne. He was active in the American Legion Post 205 in Franklin, having served as post commander and rifle squad commander.
He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football.
He loved to fish and enjoyed camping and cooking on an open fire for friends.
Father John Beitens will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at noon Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 114 Lancelot Drive, Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin, and from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Youngs Creek Cemetery near Franklin.
