Paul was the son of Kathleen C. M. Savello, the step son of Joseph Savello of Hauppauge NY, and the son of Patrick Maher who predeceased him. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 26 1963 in New York City NY and in Vietnam was serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of March the Battalion was operating in the Dien Ban District of Quang Nam Province with the CP (Command Post) located on Hill 55. On March 5, a squad was in their ambush position across the Yen River from the hamlet of Duyen Son (2) when a grenade was thrown into their midst and exploded. Mortally wounded, LCpl Maher died from fragmentation wounds by the hostile explosive device.
