James Robert "Bob" Herdt, 84, died on November 21, 2013 at the Torrington Goshen Care Center.

Bob was born in Torrington on September 20, 1929. He graduated from Torrington High School in 1947. He married Shirley Ramsey on October 14, 1950 and joined the Marines in 1951. They lived in San Diego, CA during his years in the Marines. Bob also served in the Korean War. After being honorably discharged they moved back to Torrington where they raised three children, Gary, Gail, and Gwen.

Bob owned pop and beer distribution companies, several gas stations at various locations around town, and also worked for the US Post Office. He was active in the American Legion where he was a commander and remained involved for several years. Bob and Shirley spent their retirement years in Arizona. Bob returned to Torrington in March of this year.

Bob is survived by his son Gary (Dee) Herdt of Torrington; two daughters, Gail (Darrell) Miller of Tomball, TX, and Gwen Herdt of Torrington; two grandchildren, Nicole (John) Kerr of Seven Lakes, NC, and Nathan Miller of Houston, TX; and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Latta of Cheyenne, Irene Fleenor of Cheyenne, and Elnora Griffin of Scottsdale, AZ. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents, Alex and Savina Herdt; six brothers, Albert, Alex (Blackie), Leo, Raymond, Ted, and Wilbert; and two sisters, Alma Eisenbarth and Helen Ide.
