Selma was born June 16, 1903 in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin to Olaf Topper and Julia (Peterson) Topper. Her father died in a barn fire in 1909. Her mother married Anton Rockstad in October 1912.
In 1930 Selma married Ernest Peter Gugel. They moved to Fargo, North Dakota. They returned to live in Madison, Wisconsin where Ernest worked as a barber for 53 years, retiring in 1966.
They had three children.
1. Celestine Elizabeth, b. 1933-34 WI. She died in infancy.
2. Celestine Patricia 'Sally', b. 1936 WI, m. Robert A. Lavik
3. Robert 'Bob' J. Gugel, b. 1944 WI, m. Darlene Otis
