Wilfred "Bill" Griebel, 86, of New Ulm, died Friday, November, 22, 2013 at the Oak Hills living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 26, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest Section with full military honors being conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. The St. John's Catholic United of Searles will pray the rosary at 6 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Linda Gutzke of Bell Plaine, Leann (Brian) Klement of New Ulm, Clair (Robert) Gieseke of rural New Ulm; sons, Gerald Griebel of rural New Ulm, Tim (Julie) Griebel of Chaska; grandchildren, Shanna, Shane, Shadd, Shandell, Joel, Greg, Scott, Michael, Collin, Cody, Leah and Justina; great-grandchildren, Brodee, Brynlee, Dakota, Tanner, Trayton, Mya, Lilly, Sophie, Skylar, Paige, Taylor, Max, Ava and Jovee; sister, Myrtle (Don) Brand of New Ulm; brothers, Charles (Doris) Griebel of New Ulm, Robert (Electa) Griebel of rural New Ulm, Julian (Jan) Griebel of New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene on June 26, 2011; daughter, LuEllen; great-grandson, Brylee Kupp; and by a sister, Mary Grausam.
Wilfred Joseph Griebel was born January 9, 1927 in Cottonwood Township, Brown County to Oscar and Virginia (Palmer) Griebel. He attended St. John's Catholic School in Searles. Bill served in the United States Army during WWII from 1945-1946 in the Military Police. He was united in marriage to Irene Sehr on April 18, 1950 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage they farmed in Cottonwood Township. In 1955 they farmed near Klossner, and he was also employed at the Klossner Co-op until he retired in 1981. Bill was diagnosed with ALS in 1979. He enjoyed farming, auto racing, playing cards and antique Ford tractors. He loved attending his grandchildren's activities and events. Bill was an avid supporter of ALS and MDA. He received MDA's Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award of Minnesota in 2008.
Bill was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, St. John's Catholic United of Searles, Alfred Nagel VFW Post 1648, Seifert-Bianchi American Legion Post 132 and the DAV Chapter 15 in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, ALS, MDA or the donor's choice.
