Carl Kjemperud passed away Thursday, November 28th in Littlefork following a hip fracture ten days earlier.

Carl Konrad Kjemperud was born June 30, 1917 in Cross River Township. He was baptized and confirmed at Littlefork Lutheran Church. He attended the Indahl Country School for grades 1-8, and he graduated from Littlefork High School in 1935.

Carl worked at a variety of jobs. He did farm work for Hans and Gabriel Peterson, worked the harvests in North Dakota, farmed the Hans Kjemperud farm, worked on the Galvin Line, managed the Co-op Store, and cut logs for the original Peace River Bridge on the Alaska Highway. Carl built his own small farm along Highway 65 across from Wallace Davis and worked at logging camps in the winter and for the State Highway Department in the summer. Carl was the last surviving lumberjack from the last log drive in Minnesota on the Littlefork River.

Carl married Iva May Smith on April 6, 1939 at the Lutheran Parsonage. Reverend Belsass officiated. They had two daughters; Caroline in 1940 and Linda in 1942.

In 1951, the family moved to Arizona due to Iva's health. Carl worked for Reynold's Aluminum in Phoenix and later for Foxworth-Galbrarth Lumber in Prescott.

The family returned to Littlefork in 1954. Carl began working for Mando in the Sulphite Department. Five years later, he transferred to the Storeroom where he worked for 23 more years until retiring from Boise Cascade in 1982.

During Carl's life, he also served as County Assessor and Justice of the Peace. He helped build the Cross River Hall and served 12 years as County Commissioner.

Carl is survived by two daughters, Caroline Burley and Linda (LeRoy) Dahl; four grandchildren, Laura Merritt Sheldon (Rusty Cheney), Leasa (Jeff) White, LuAnn (Doug) Henrickson, and Craig (Cyndi) Burley; 12 great-grandchildren, Riley Merritt, Kristin (Tom) Shover, Jenny (Jed) Smith, Russ (Aurora) Merritt, Jonathan (Anna) Blake, Alayna (Jesse) Grotberg, Jessica (Ryan) Lucca, Rylan Henrickson, Liana Henrickson, Kallie Henrickson, Austin Burley, Nicholas Burley, six great-great grandchildren; one brother, Palmer (Dorothy) Kjemperud; his dear friend Darlene Lueders and family; and many nieces and nephews.
