Hobart "Hobie" Porter, age 82, a resident of Glen Ellyn since 1973, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Hobie was born February 21, 1928 in Marblehead, Ohio to Nelson and Elfrieda Porter. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952. Mr. Porter began his career as Senior Staff Engineer at the U.S. Gypsum Plant in Gypsum, Ohio and was later promoted and transferred to U.S. Gypsum Corp in Chicago, retired after 35 years. Hobie graduated in 1946 from Lakeside High School in Lakeside, OH where he was captain of the football team in 1945. He attended Bowling Green University in Ohio and transferred to Purdue University in Lafayette, IN graduating in 1958. In June of 1953 he married Ruth Mary Ingram and 4 months later he was shipped to Korea for 1 year, where he served in the Korean War from 1953-1954. He was a member of the American Legion, V,.F.W. and the Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad. He served on the school board, loved sailing and served as a crew member of Blue Max, racing to Mackinaw Island, etc. Hobie also loved snow skiing and joined the Over the Hill Ski Club in Chicago. He was an active member of the Glen Ellyn Newcomers Alumni "GENA". He is survived by his beloved wife of 57½years, Ruth Mary; he was the loving father of Judy (Paul) Fasold of Chicago; dear grandfather of Emily and Eric Fasold, fond brother of John Porter. A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, February 24, 2011 4 - 8pm with memorial service at 7pm at the Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St, Glen Ellyn. Private inurnment will be in Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights, OH at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 486, Lakeside, OH 43440 or the Ex Libris Library, PO Box 74, Marblehead, OH 43440 appreciated.
