SPRINGFIELD - Frederick "Fred" A. Rechner, Sr., 90, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 3:17 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center.

Fred was born June 10, 1919, in Springfield, the son of August and Helen Bansbach Rechner. He married Mary Evelyn Hickey on September 18, 1951, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield; she preceded him in death on April 24, 2007.

Frederick and his family owned and operated Rechner's Bakery and Grocery in Springfield for many years retiring in 1978. He was a veteran of the Army and served in World War II, receiving three Overseas Service bars, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three bronze battle stars, and the World War II Victory medal. Fred was a fifty-eight year member of Blessed Sacrament Church, and a member of Elks Lodge 158. Fred was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame fan and enjoyed bowling and cooking. The greatest joy in his life was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Fred A. Rechner Jr.; four sisters, Cecelia Cusick, Marie Rechner, Helen Getzendanner and Anna Rechner; five brothers, William A., Albert C., Joseph H., Otto F., and August L. "Bud" Rechner.

He is survived by his daughter, Trish (husband, Stephen) Squires of Springfield; his son, Tom (fiancee, Pam Iberg) Rechner of Chatham; nine grandchildren, Heather (husband, Chris) Julseth, Jason Rechner, Nikki Squires, Andrew Squires, Michael Rechner, Jeremy (wife, Gayla) Willis, Megan Willis, Ried Carlson, and Rachel Carlson; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Kaden Julseth; his daughter-in-law, Cindy Rechner of Springfield, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009, at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield, with Rev. David Hoefler, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Department of Defense.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church Building Fund, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield, IL 62704 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
