John was born in St. Louis March 20, 1933, to the late Elmer E. and Jean (Stillwell) Kempf. He was united in marriage March 24, 1979, to Patricia McGarvey in St. Louis. He served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, was a member of Shriners Moolah Temple and Meridian Masonic Lodge #2.
He was preceded in death by brother, Elmer Kempf Jr. and a granddaughter, Diana Willoughby.
His survivors include wife, Patricia Kempf; son, Scott Kempf and wife Karen; daughters, Jill Wilkinson and husband Dave, and Kristina Kempf; stepdaughter, Nona Miller and husband Otto; grandchildren, Shannon Willoughby, Amanda Wilkinson and Erik Kempf; and step-grandchildren, Jeff Miller and Angela Mense.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gottenstroeter Funeral Home, Gerald.
