A tragic car accident has taken the lives of James and Michelle Kutten and their baby, Nicole. They will be dearly missed by everyone who knew them. Jim’s daughter, Sarah Kutten of Woodburn, Ore. survived the accident. Those left behind are comforted by the knowledge that Jim, Shelly, and Nicole are safe together in God’s arms.

Jim was born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana. He came to the US in 1977 to attend Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. He did an internship with the United Nations before graduating from Willamette in 1983. Jim then started his career with the Oregon Department of Corrections. While working full-time in Salem, he earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Oregon in Eugene and also became a US Citizen. At the time of his death, Jim was the Diversity Manager at the Oregon State Correctional Institution. Jim and Michelle Heidt were married October 20, 1990. They loved traveling and especially enjoyed trips to the beach. Jim enjoyed golf and played competitive soccer. Jim was a “people person” and never met anyone who wasn’t a friend.

Michelle “Shelly” was born in Eugene and raised in Salem, Oregon. She graduated from South Salem High School in 1982, and Oregon State University in 1986. She was active with the Sigma Kappa Sorority. After graduation, Shelly worked for Beneficial Finance in San Rafael, Calif. before returning to Salem in 1988 to work for the State of Oregon. At the time of her death, Michelle was a Program Analyst in the Child Support Division. Shelly was successful at every endeavor she pursued. She excelled in her education, career, and relationships. If asked, Shelly would count being Nicole’s mother as her greatest accomplishment in life. She loved being a new mom and the last seventeen months have been the happiest of her life.

Nicole was born in Salem, Oregon. Her parents were members of the First United Methodist Church and Nicole was baptized there March 10, 2002. Her God Parents were Emily Moore and Tom Heidt. Well over 100 members of the Ghana community held a special ceremony in celebration of Nicole’s baptism. Nicole had many friends at the Little Village Learning Center. She was a bright and delightful child who brought joy to her family.

Jim was proceeded in death by his father, James B. Kutten. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Kutten of Woodburn, Ore; his mother, Sarah Gyimah Kutten of Kumasi, Ghana; sisters, Mary, Mercy, and Grace; brothers, Akwaai, Kofi Baffoe, Kwaku, Robert, Thomas, and Kofi Badu; as well as many nieces and nephews.
