He was born on March 29, 1919 in Stokes County, to the late Joseph Thomas and Ila Savannah Smith Tilley.
He worked for Boles Hardware for 29 years, 25 years of independent work and served in WWII in the United States Army Air Corp.
Mr. Tilley was a member of Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church.
Mr. Tilley is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Wenonah Tilley of the home; two sons, Sandy Lee Tilley, Dan Carter Tilley, both of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Suzanne Tilley Jones of Raleigh; one brother, William A. "Bill" Tilley of Pinnacle; one sister, Mary Jane "Janie" Tilley Boyles of Winston-Salem; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great grandchildren.
Mr. Tilley was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard Tilley, Theodore Tilley and Joseph Thomas "Buster" Tilley; sisters, Rachel Cortez, Josephine Sechrist and Vera Mabe.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Elder Vance Jones and Elder Jimmy Joyce officiating. Interment will follow at Pinnacle United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 10, 2011 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church, 2097 Brown Mountain Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041 or to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
