John was born on a farm rented by his parents in Dexter Township, Lidgerwood, ND. The farm was adjacent to his father's half brother Richard Gully's home place, approximately 4.5 miles northwest of the City of Lidgerwood in the southeast corner of the state. John's family lived ten years in the area before his dad, Matt Jaeger, fleeing Prohibition officers, moved to Canada. After settling in SK, he sent for his family, which included John, two older sisters, Elizabeth and Irene, and their mother Gertie.
John lived in Tuxford and later Paradise Hill, SK before relocating as a young man to Fort St. John, BC where he lived for the rest of his life.
He married Ella Ryde on September 5, 1938 at Revelstoke, BC. They had four children: Kenneth John, Evelyn Sankovic, Yvonne Martini and Loretta Mary, and 12 grandchildren.
John died at age 88.
