Martin Gustav Ziebell, district conservationist, 89, Stillwater, MN, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 after a long illness.

He was born March 8, 1921 in Westfield, son of the late August and Laura (Brose) Ziebell, he graduated from Wautoma High School in 1941. Martin served in the Army manning anti-aircraft artillery in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater during World War II.

He married Gertrude Williams Sept. 3, 1949 in Wild Rose. In 1950, Martin graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Soils and Agronomy. Mart and Gert started their 60 years of marriage in upstate New York where he was a USDA soils scientist in Lowville and Plattsburg.

He transferred to St. Cloud, MN in 1954 and for health reasons relocated to Stillwater in 1968 to serve as district conservationist for Washington County. He took great pride in helping develop the Lake Elmo Park Reserve.

He retired from federal service in 1983. Water conservation was very important to him.

Mart was a member of Rotary. He served as both elder and trustee in the church. His varied interests included photography, woodworking, hunting for and polishing agates, stamp collecting, traveling, fishing, gardening, lawn work, playing bridge, hearts and Yahtzee, dancing and listening to light classical music.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; three daughters, Janet Ziebell, Stillwater; Ruth Lehmann, Stillwater; Becky (Dennis) Anderson, White Bear Lake; two grandsons, Nathan (Annka) Lehmann, Charleston, SC; Scott, Colorado Springs, CO; and granddaughter Erica (Anthony Krull) Anderson, Menomonie. Also niece Kay Anne (Jim) Willoughby, nephew Larry (Jan) Erdman and many sisters- and brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Gertrude Erdman and niece, Debra Moran.

Visitation for Martin will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center located at 2800 Curve Crest Blvd. (NW corner of Hwy. 36 and Cty. Rd. 5), Stillwater. A one-hour viewing precedes the funeral service from 12- 1 p.m. at the church. The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church located at 6201 Osgood Ave. North, Stillwater, Friday, May 14 at 1 p.m., with internment following at Fairview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church, that will be designated for building and grounds.
