Caroline was the daughter of Johann Gottfried Krinke (1777 - 1835) and Charlotte Louise Merkelt (1792 - 1856). She was born in Ober Waldenburg, Lower Silesia, Prussia on November 24th, 1820. Caroline married Ernst Wilhelm Mewes on January 8th, 1849 in Waldenburg.

CAROLINE MEWES

Shiner Gazette, 23 Apr 1896, page 4

Grandma Mewes departed this life Monday morning at 2 o'clock at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Chas Flato. The interment took place at the K of P cemetery Monday eve at 4 o'clock.

Grandma Mewes was born in Germany November 24, 1821 [1820], and was therefore nearly seventy-five years of age. She and her husband came to this country in 1852 [1854]. In 1867 Mr. Mewes died at Alleyton, this state, of yellow fever. Grandma Mewes leaves four children; Mrs. Chas Flato, Mrs. Mueller of Flatonia and Will and Frank.

*Note - Caroline immigrated to Texas in 1854, along with the Prause family (also from Waldenburg). The Prause and Mewes families went to Fayette County and later settled in Colorado County.

* Update - November 2018 - Arnold Prause's wife, Charlotte Koehler is related to Caroline. This was discovered through my genetic genealogy research and DNA match to a descendant of Henry Koehler (1843 - 1923) whom first settled in Old Flatonia in the 1870's. I believe that Charlotte is a first cousin to Caroline and likely related on the Merkelt line.
