In 1868, John's parents and siblings Michael (Michel), Peter, and Mathias (Matt), moved to the United States and settled in Dane County, Wisconsin.
He and his wife, Eva, had nine children, six of whom died during a diphtheria epidemic (see family links, below).
His surviving children were Mathias Anton (1878-1948), Henry (1880-1919), and John H. (1891-1951).
