Adam John Walter. Reverend Bryan Ernest from St. Luke's Catholic Church officiated at funeral services for Adam on January 11, 2014 at the Gubser Funeral Home in Ogallala, Nebraska. Adam was laid to his eternal rest at the Ovid Cemetery, Ovid, Colorado.
Adam John Walter was born January 30, 1924 to Peter Sr. & Elizabeth (Lick) Walter of Ovid, Colorado. Adam was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith.
He attended the Ovid Public Schools. His early years were spent assisting his father in irrigated farming and livestock production. In the late 1940's he served as an on-call deputy sheriff in Sedgwick County. Prior to becoming the owner and operator of the Texaco Service Station in Ovid in 1950, he was employed at the Great Western Sugar Company. However, because his primary interest was in agriculture, he returned to farming in the Ovid valley in 1954.
On February 14, 1960 Adam and Betty Lueth were united in Holy Matrimony at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Julesburg, Colorado. Following their marriage, Adam & Betty settled on a dry land farm south of Sedgwick, Colorado that had been homesteaded by Betty's grandfather. They eventually purchased that property along with some surrounding farm and ranch land.
Adam's major crop produced was primarily hard red winter wheat. His ranching operation involved cattle production and livestock feeding. An interest in horses led to the raising and training of thoroughbred race horses. He was a licensed owner/trainer in various states. A memorable time for Adam in the 1950's was when he managed the local youth and town teams in the sport of baseball. An intense interest in the sport inspired him to be instrumental in the concept and development of the Ovid baseball field.
Adam was a long-time member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, Ogallala, Nebraska; an Honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus; a life member of the Ogallala Elks Lodge No. 1760 and an Honorary member of Colorado County Sheriffs. His other interests were reflected by memberships in the American Quarter Horse Association, the Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders association and the World Weightlifting Federation Association.
Adam was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Three living sisters, Rose, Margaret, and Lena remain from a family of eleven children. Adam is survived by his wife, Betty of 53 years, Sister-in-law, Beverly Weinsheim, Brother-in-law, John Lueth and his wife, Theresa, Brother-in-law Robert (Bobby) Lueth and his wife, Deborah; many nieces and nephews.
