Gertrude Howe
Gertrude Elna Howe, age 87, of rural Sperry, Iowa, died at her home Wednesday morning, October 19, 2005. The daughter of Albert and Lydia Hingst Rowe, she was born on April 3, 1918, at Letts, Iowa. She married Lyman Foster Howe on August 28, 1955 at Grandview, Iowa.
Gertrude graduated from the Letts High School in 1938. During WW II she worked at the ammunition plant at Middletown. She later worked at GPC at Muscatine and then at the Oscar Mayer Plant in Davenport. After her marriage, she worked side by side with her husband Lyman on their farms southwest of Mediapolis. She was an excellent cook and homemaker and she enjoyed embroidery and always a good joke.
Gertrude is survived by her husband, Lyman; two sisters, Florence Whitten of Muscatine and Jean Burgus of Burlington; two brothers, Wesley Rowe of Muscatine and Lawrence 'Babe' and Betty Jo Rowe of Grandview; two sisters-in-law, Helen Anderson of Sperry and Gladys Rowe of Wapello; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Dale; two brothers, Theodore Rowe and Calvin Rowe; and a sister, Mabel Rowe.
The funeral ceremony for Gertrude Howe will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 22, 2005, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Mediapolis with Rev. Beth Briggs officiating. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis.
Friends may call after 2:00 PM today at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the United Methodist Church at Kingston.
