PARENTS:
Lawrence's father George Albert Johnson was born in 1883 in the USA and he died, on 22 Oct 1908, when Lawrence was only four years old. He was a horse breaker, and cow handler, and by family tradition, apparently died after he was "bucked from a horse" and "his head struck a wagon tongue", "foolishly left by some careless hand", extending under the corral fence. He succumbed to his head injury two days later leaving his widow, Freida, with three children, aged four, two, and a newborn, George Albert Jr., just 6 weeks of age. In this case family tradition proved to be incorrect according to newspaper article which has that George Albert was hearding a pacel of hogs from Cedar Creek Ranch near Elba to the Red Oak Ranch, location unknown.

Their mother Freida Johanna Bergner was born in Stöde, Vasternorrland, Sweden on 29 Dec 1883. She immigrated with her parents, Erik Peter Bergner 1865-1911 and Ingburg Marta Påhlsdotter 1862-1924 along with her newborn sister Birta "Bertha" Fredericka (29 Jun 1887-1961) under a Visa dated 29 July 1887. Their trip was likely by train to Göteborg where we know they went by ship to Liverpool England. The ship stopped in Queenstown Ireland and took seven days and just over seven hours to the Port of New York. Their destination was Atkinson, Holt Co., Nebraska where they stayed for at least twelve years, for their youngest daughter Ruth was born their in February 1898. They next appear on the 1900 US census in South Dakota and then on the 1901 Canada Census Lawrence's mother and her family are situated in Lamerton, Alberta, where Lawrence spent most of his early childhood.

TIMELINE:
* 1904 Lawrence was born in Lamerton, Red Deer Census District, just west of the most northerly inlet of Buffalo Lake. Bashaw where his grandfather, Peter Erik Bergner 1865-1911, died is on the opposite side of the inlet. His grandmother, Ingburg Marta Påhlsdotter died in nearby Mirror, and both maternal grandparents are buried in the cemetery just north-east of town.
* In 1906 Lawrence was in Lamerton S22; T41; R22; M4 - with his mother, father, and sister.
* In May/Jun 1908 his father received a land grant for that property.
* In Dec 1908 his father died in an accident, on Cedar Creek Ranch near Elba - his grandfather William Johnson lived at that time in Cushing, Nebraska, where his brother George Jr. was born on 10 Sep 1908, and his father is perhaps buried there.
* In 1911 Freida appears as a domestic on the Charles Ludwig farm, along with her children Lawrence and Amy (Marie). Charles was a family friend - a neighbour in South Dakota who also settled on the west side of Buffalo Lake just east of Mirror and south of Lamerton.
* In 1916 Freida has remarried, to a Samuel Beeman. The 1916 census spelling is BAEMAN, and they are living on T62; R10;M4. They are listed as Sam Baeman, Freida Baeman, Laurence Baeman, Ann Baeman, and George Baeman and the children are documented as being the sons and daughter of Sam Baeman the "head", as per 1916 Canada Prairie census.
* After 1916 Freida and Sam had two more children: Ray Dell Erik Peter Beeman and Joy Geneva Beeman. Freida also raised a grandaughter Madelaine (Madline).

* In 1921 Lawrence's sister, Amy Marie had a baby Madelaine Beaman and she was by family tradition, raised as her sister, and died young, though that Madelaine was adopted, has never been ruled out. Marie was married twice, first to George Horton, then she married a Navy man Jack Sheppard in Victoria, B.C. They moved to Queensland, Australia in the 1940s. Marie died 31 Oct 1995 in the Zion Lutheran Home, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She and Jack are according to Marie's estate lawyer, in the ashes niche at Albany Creek Park Cemetery in Brisbane, Australia.

* In November 1925 Lawrence married Alice Wilkerson Carr at the United Church Manse in Vegreville, Alberta.
* In October 1926 their eldest son Ken was born in Lavoy.
* Then they had three more children born in Ohaton, Alberta.
* In 1935 or 1936 Lawrence and Alice moved to Victoria. They lived on Oceanview, near McCrae Farm (now Cedar Hill Golf Course). The children attended Cloverdale School on Quadra St. They lived on Alder Street for a time, then moved to Gosworth Avenue near Hillside Ave.
* In 1937 Lyle Edward Johnson was born.

* Lawrence's brother George b. 10 Sep 1908 in Cushing,Howard Co., Nebraska; d Sep 1993 in Lethbridge, Alberta; m. "Nancy" and had two children: Dennis who died in an industrial welding accident in his early twenties, after his marriage to H. Elizabeth Stauffer; and Beverly 1939-2006 who married Scott Henderson. Bev and Scott had three children.

Lawrence was a longshoreman for many years and sometime around 1970, after he retired, he lived in Comox on the Island for I time, then moved to Williams Lake. We well remember his "herd" of little pink piggies and his array of egg laying chickens. In William's Lake he lived on the hill above where the Super 8 Hotel, once sat. He worked at the Stampeder Hotel on the North east side of the Cariboo and Chilcotin-Bella Coola Highways intersection. He was the night clerk there. A couple or few days before he died he was found sitting with his back against a tree trunk and was taken to hospital where he passed away after his heart gave out. His ashes were spread at one of his favourite places, the place where he was found, on land 10 miles north of where he lived.

Grandfather was a quiet, peaceful, hard working man who enjoyed the outdoors. He always sent his grandchildren Easter Cards and Birthday Cards with a little money enclosed in the easter card, every year. He always signed his name Grandfather and on birthdays added "Many Happy Returns".
