Dennis Emmel, 77, Sherwood, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in a Minneapolis MN hospital.

Dennis Ralph Emmel was born on January 23, 1936, a son of Herbert and Tina (Wisdahl) Emmel on the family farm in rural Norma, ND. He was raised and educated in Norma.

In January of 1956, Dennis entered the United States Army, and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. He was honorably discharged in January of 1958. Following his discharge he returned to the family farm and assisted his dad and brother.

On November 8, 1958, Dennis was united in marriage to JoAnn Brannon in Alexandria, VA. They made their home on the family farm near Sherwood, ND, where Dennis farmed and ranched. In 1969, Dennis received the Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year. Dennis remained active with the farm his entire life.

Dennis enjoyed working on the farm, hunting, spending time with his family, and helping others. He was a member of Stafford Baptist Church and attended Faith Baptist Church. Dennis was also a member of Board of Citizens United to Save the Valley. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and will be missed by all that knew him.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 55 years; JoAnn; children, Debbie Erickson, Jeff Emmel, and Michele Nelson; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Annie Jensen, Eunice Gilseth, Larry Emmel, Beverly Bernston, Duane Emmel and Doyle Emmel; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Darrel; grandson-in-law, Lee Helmers, and two brothers-in-law, John Gilseth and Leon Durbin.
