Orvetta was born November 3, 1920 to Elmer Edward and Nettie Ann (Smith) Short in Hamilton, Kansas. She graduated from Hamilton High School where she was very accomplished in sports. She married Charles Daniel Black at her parents' home in Hamilton on December 24, 1939 and they spent 70 plus years together. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, sports, and cards.
Orvetta and Daniel lived in Leon, Holyrood, Chase, and Plainville, all in Kansas, as well as Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and Perryton, Texas before settling in Wichita. She was a homemaker most of her married life, working later at jewelry stores in Plainville and Pauls Valley. They spent nearly 30 years traveling, playing golf, and enjoying family and friends after Daniel retired.
Orvetta was preceded in death by her parents, spouse Daniel, son Daryl Lee Black, brothers Loy Edward Short and Elmer Elwood Short, and sister Freda Dale Nugent.
Orvetta is survived by a son Larry Black, Lee's Summit, Missouri, nieces Connie Stowell, Benton, Kansas, and Berna Loy (Leonard) Ost, Powell, Wyoming, nephews Ronnie (Janet) Black, Wichita, Kansas, Galen Black, Charleston, Oregon, Ron (Nancy) Utter, Augusta, Montana, Wayne (Bonnie) Utter, Newport News, Virginia, Rodney (Patricia) Short, Powell, Wyoming, and Tom (Mary) Short, Parkville, Missouri.
Visitation with family greeting friends and family will be held Thursday, January 30, from 10-12:00 noon at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home in Augusta, Kansas. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton, Kansas. A memorial has been established with Hospice or a charity of your choice in care of the funeral home.
