Marlene Ann Mangum, 79, a longtime resident of the Verboort community passed away Sunday morning, July 31, 2016, at her home.

Marlene was born on the family farm in Forest Grove, OR. She was the oldest of three daughters born to Louis and Ethel (Heesacker) Spiering. She lived on the family farm off Reiling Rd in Roy all of her life. She attended St Francis of Assisi Catholic Grade school and graduated from Banks High School with the Class of 1954. She later attended Shaw Business School in Portland.

She met her future husband, W. Verl through a mutual friend. Verl was enlisted in the Air Force, and they courted for a year and a half through weekly letters and saw each other only while he was on leave. Twenty dates later they were married on June 1, 1957, in Roy, OR. Following their wedding, they lived in Las Vegas where Verl was stationed in the Air Force. Upon his discharge, they moved to Verboort where they have lived since.

Marlene was a devoted and loving mother to her four children Verla, Wendy, Jill, and Randy. She also worked outside the home. First in the fields with the children picking berries and beans, then babysitting, and later at Times Litho as a typist. Once her youngest was out of school Marlene started as a clerk for the Washington County Parole and Probation Board, a job she had for over 20 years until retirement.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, and baking, and everyone remembers her delicious cinnamon rolls. She was never idle and was always crafting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and making ceramics. She worked the pot holder booth at the Verboort Sausage Dinner, making over 700 pot holders a year for many years. Verl and Marlene both liked to visit the natural wonders in Oregon and surrounding states which included waterfalls, caves, hot springs, beaches, and mountains. She played the piano and accordion.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law; Alan Greene

She is survived her loving husband; Verl, four children and their spouses; Verla and Richard Kelly of Roy, Wendy and Richard Bumgardner of Vancouver, WA, Jill and Perry Banister of Hillsboro, Randy and Linda Mangum of Canby, two sisters and a brother-in-law; Lois and Frank Gifford of Portland, Karen Greene of Cornelius, five grandchildren; Kimberlea, Korey, Joshua, Jennifer and Elysia, and three great-grandchildren; Ally, Lacy and Triniti.
