Norman Benson, age 77, of rural Fairchild, Wis., went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 17, 2005. He quietly passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Norman Carl Edward Benson was born on April 9, 1928, at Elroy, Wis., to Lars and Nellie (Thompson) Benson. His early years were spent in Juneau County until the family moved to the farm near Fairchild in 1940. Norman attended Pettisville country school through eighth grade, where he excelled in spelling, and then attended Fairchild High School from where he graduated in 1945.

Norman married Margaret Agnes Donnelly of Augusta on June 30, 1951; and they celebrated 50 years of marriage in June of 2001. To this union, four children were born: Eunice, twins, Arnold and Karen, and Paul.

Norman loved farming and chose to stay on the family farm where he had dairy cattle until 1986; and since then, he raised beef cattle with his son, Paul. He loved the outdoors and appreciated being a steward of the lands entrusted to him. He bought his first acreage at age 17, and enjoyed growing strawberries in his early years as a farmer. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, traveling as far as Montana to hunt, as well as taking trips with his family. He was an accomplished dartball player and participated on several teams for many years. He made his profession of faith to Jesus Christ at age 12, and was baptized in his early 20s by the Reverend William J. Donnelly at First Baptist Church of Augusta. He served as a deacon, choir member, Sunday school teacher and as an Awana youth group leader at First Baptist Church of Augusta.

He was a quiet, loving, supportive husband and father. He was compassionate, wise and faithful in service. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Norman is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Eunice and husband Horst Bruenjes of Ramona, Calif., Arnold and wife Lora Jean Benson of Kunming, China, Karen and husband Floyd Bates of Boring, Ore., and Paul Benson of Fairchild; his nine grandchildren, Manfred Bruenjes, Monica Bruenjes, Daniel Benson, Michael Bates, Andrew Benson, Joshua Bates, Alyssa Benson, Emilee Bates and Caleb Benson; his sister, Helen Bjornson of El Cajon, Calif.; his cousins, Paul Thorbjornsen of Winter, Wis., and Helen Doerner of Reedsburg, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lars, and mother, Nellie; his brothers, Bernard and John; his sister, Leone Samuelson.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Augusta. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta, with a luncheon following at the church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2005, at Anderson Funeral Home, Augusta.
