Thelma Spencer

Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Spencer, 99, will be held today, Oct. 23, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Lakeside United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Susan Hilliard and the Rev. Ted DeWeese officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Minden Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Ralph Robinson and Son. Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 22, from 3 until 5 p.m.

She passed away Friday, Oct. 20, in Trinity Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Ark. Mrs. Spencer, of Pine Bluff, Ark., was born July 23, 1901 in Haynesville. She was reared and educated in Minden where she graduated from high school. In 1922 she married G.B. Spencer, who was a road contractor in North Louisiana, so the early years of her marriage were spent living in tents and various job sites. She enjoyed telling stories of this adventure and of the happy times of this period of her life. Thelma became a member of the Methodist Church as a child and remained an active and devout church member and Christian for the rest of her life. She attended Louisiana State Normal College and was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello. In 1930, she moved to Arkansas with her family. She lived with her family in Batesville, Paris, Fordyce and Star City where she was a school teacher for several years.

Mrs. Spencer is preceded in death by her husband, G.B. Spencer; a daughter, Gwen, and daughter-in-law, Martha J. "Mot" Spencer.

She is survived by her two sons, George B. Spencer and his wife Karlyn of Paducah, Ky. and Joe W. Spencer and his wife July of Lebanon, Tenn., seven grandchildren, George Spencer, III of Fayetteville, Ark., Mary Lou and Fred Chilcote of Little Rock, Ark., Matt and Jo Spencer of Little Rock, Ark., Joe and Pegi Sue Spencer of Dallas, Texas, Lance and Julie Spencer of Atlanta, Ga., Mark and Angie Spencer of Kingsport, Tenn., and Elizabeth and Adrian Goad of Smyrna, Tenn.; two step-grandchildren, Jane and Jim Melrose of Franklin, Tenn., and Barbara and Chip Higgins also of Franklin; nine great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and loving caregiver, Lois H. Morgan of Pine Bluff, Ark.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to trinity Village, 6400 Trinity Drive, Pine Bluff, Ark. 71603 or to the donor's favorite charity.
