The eldest of three children who suddenly took on the huge responsibility for taking care of her two siblings when her parents in May of 1926 decided to separate and divorce. She remained close to both of her parents for the rest of their lives, but never got over the trauma.

Began to create a scrapbook at age 11 during the 7th grade. It contained things of interest to her such as universities, historic landmarks, creative and inventive works of art and engineering, natural phenomenon, a trip to Dayton and tour of Tiffin in pictures, her grade cards and notable passages. One of several notable entries is "Study Now before you are old, for Learning is better than Silver and Gold, Riches and Nonsense will soon fade away, But a Good Education will never decay." She sited the source as being "Alice's scrape Book." January 18, 1927. A strong belief in this philosophy remained with her the rest of her life.
