Charlotte Smith, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014 at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Society, Arapahoe, Nebraska. Charlotte was born on December 20, 1908 in Walter, Russia to Christein & Elizabeth (Gies) Butherus.

In 1910, Charlotte and her family moved to Bartley, Nebraska. Her father worked for Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad now Burlington-Northern-Santa Fe Railroad. Later they would move to Cambridge, Nebraska and then to Holbrook, Nebraska. She attended Holbrook (NE.) High School and graduated with the class of 1928. She married Clyde Smith on May 28, 1937 at Norton, Kansas. They started out traveling the country with a donkey ball team for 16 years (Charlotte referred to this as her honeymoon) then owned a peanut farm in Oklahoma then a cafe in Kansas City.

Then moved to Oregon and began painting houses and buildings. In the early 60's they moved back to Arapahoe, Nebraska and worked at painting in the Arapahoe, Nebraska area. She enjoyed fishing, walking, and being a caretaker of other family members. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Holbrook, Nebraska and later of the Arapahoe Christian Church, Arapahoe, Nebraska.

Charlotte was preceded in death by: parents; husband, Clyde Smith; step-son, Clyde, Jr. "Jack" Smith; sisters, Kathryn Butherus, Marie (Ed) Atkins, Elizabeth (Warren) Sams, Leta Butherus, Alice (Herb) Griess, Phyllis Remington and Brother-In-Law, William Glen Magnum.

Charlotte is survived by: daughter-in-law, Darleen Smith of California; sister, Pauline Magnum of Texas City, Texas; brother-In-Law, Arthur & wife Marcia Remington of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren: Lori (Doug) Whaley, Melinda Smith
Great grandchildren: Sean (Jen) Whaley, Devon Whaley, Brenna (Iselin,) Tobias; great-great grandchildren, Caitlyn Whaley, George Tobias and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services were Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 2:30 PM at the Arapahoe Christian Church, Arapahoe, Nebraska with Pastor David Welch, as officiator.

Interment was in Arapahoe Cemetery, Arapahoe, Nebraska.
