Agnes Rabben marks 100th birthday

President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton sent their special greetings, as did the family and friends of Agnes Marie Rabben, who celebrated her 100th birthday last week.

Dignitaries from the local Hermann Sons Lodge honored the German native with a special party at Beverly Manor, complete with live accordion music and a birthday cake.

Werner Ebertus, president of the Petaluma Hermann Sons Lodge; lodge vice president Gretel Gruener; and grand president of all Hermann Sons Lodges Dora Riedel presented Rabben with birthday commendations from the city and the Clintons.

Rabben, the former Agnes Marie Meyer, was born June 28, 1895 in Dorstadt, Germany, the second to last child in a family of nine girls. She learned cooking and housekeeping and worked for various families in their households.

She met her husband, Karl Albert Greifeld, in Germany in 1923 when he returned to Germany from California. They were married in 1925 in Kernners Grove in Sonoma Valley, and had a son, Ralph Greifeld, in 1926.

The family lived on Sixth Street in Petaluma.

Rabben learned English and worked in Karl's O.K. Bakery on Kentucky Street. Her husband passed away in 1932 and the bakery was sold.

Rabben later worked as an Avon representative and as a Luziers cosmetics saleswoman.

She bought a chicken ranch in 1938 on Hatchery Road, now Goodwin Avenue, where she raised chickens and had 5,000 laying hens.

After World War II she made her first trip back to Germany, staying for five months. She later returned in 1964 and 1984.

In 1959 she married a longtime friend, Henry Rabben, and the couple lived on the chicken ranch.

Following Rabben's death in 1964, she sold the ranch and moved back to Sixth Street where she retired and spent her time gardening and visiting with friends.

She was active in her church and donated her time driving people to and from their medical appointments.
