Funeral services for Dr. Emil G. Hirsch, rabbi of Sinai congregation, one of the foremost Hebrew scholars in the world, will be held from Sinai temple here tomorrow morning. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Dr. Hirsch died yesterday after a short illness. Death was due to an abscess of the lung and pneumonia. He was 71 years of age.

With Dr. Hirsch at the end were his wife, who was Matilda Einhorm of New York when he married her in 1878; his daughter, Mrs. Gerson B. Levi, and Dr. Levi, the son-in-law, all of whom had attended him during the few days of his illness.

Dr. Hirsch was born in Luxemburg May 22, 1852, the son of Dr. Samuel Hirsch, also a noted rabbi. Fourteen years later he came with his parents to America and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.

When he was ordained in 1877 Dr. Hirsch became rabbi of Har Sinai congregation in Baltimore. A year later he was at the Adath-Israel congregation at Louisville, where he remained until 1880, when he began his forty-two years' of service in Chicago at Sinai temple.
In Chicago Rabbi Hirsch's activities multiplied and took on new weight. In 1892 he became a professor in the department of rabbinical literature at the University of Chicago. He was Trumbull lecturer at John Hopkins university in 1902.

For almost ten years Dr. Hirsch was a member of the board of trustees of the Chicago public library, and he was one of the original members of the morals commission appointed by Mayor Harrison. Rockford (IL) Republic - 08 Jan 1923
