Marie Kuehl, nee Moravec, was born February 2, 1845, near Pisek, Bohemia and passed away at her home southwest of Verdigre, December 15, 1928 at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 13 days.

In the year 1866, she came to America with her parents and siblings. They first located in Chicago, but a couple years later, moved to Knox county, Nebraska, taking up a homestead near Niobrara.

In the year 1870, she was united in marriage to Alexander Gruenberg. For about three years, they lived on a farm near Springfield, S.D. Then, moving onto a homestead south of Niobrara. To this union seven children were born: Emil, who died at age 21, Emma, who died in infancy, Mary, who died at age of 13, George, who died at age 28, Frank, Anna and Henry.

Mr. Gruenberg died in 1878. The burden of raising and caring for this large family of children was thrown upon the shoulders of the widow. She took up the task with cheerful resolution.

In 1880 she was married to Eggert Kuehl. They took their residence on his homestead, a short distance southwest of Verdigre, where she made her home until the time of her demise.

To this union three children were born: Eggert, who died in infancy, Edward E. of Verdigre and Mrs. Hattie Lee of Sioux City, Iowa.

Mr. Kuehl passed away in 1913. Since that time she has made her home with her son, Edward, on the farm.

On December 5th, she suffered an attack of flu. This later developed into hypostatic pneumonia, which resulted in her death.

Her death takes another of those pioneer settlers, who came to the country, when it was a bleak frontier and, through toil and hardship and suffering, coupled with courage of a high order, laid the foundations for our present prosperity.

Three sons and two daughters are left to mourn her passing: Frank Gruenberg of Washington; Mrs. Anna Meyer of Winnetoon, Henry Gruenbert of Stuart, Edward E. Kuehl of Verdigre and Mrs. Hattie Lee of Sioux City. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Katherine Randa of Niobrara and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Louis Moravec of Los Angeles, Calif.

Funeral services were held from the ZCBJ Hall in Verdigre, Monday afternoon and were largely attended. William J. Svoboda made the address, speaking words of comfort to the bereaved relatives. Floral tributes were many and beautiful. Interment was made in the ZCBJ cemetery north of this city.

The Citizen joins with the host of friends of the family in extending sincere sympathy and condolence.
