OBITUARY

PETERSBURG — Frank A. Ernst, a Virginia civic and industrial leader and one of Petersburg's most esteemed and beloved residents, died Saturday, December 24.

Since his retirement as manger of Allied Chemical Corp's nitrogen division at Hopewell in 1957 he had devoted his energies to the service of this state and this community.

He was a former chairman of the Virginia Slate Ports Authority served twice as president of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce and was a director of the American Association of Port Authorities.

He was a member of the Legislative Advisory Council on the peaceful use of atomic energy and a member of the advisory committee to the Council on Higher Education.

Mr. Ernst headed a committee that recommended establishment of Richard Bland College in Prince George County, a college to which he gave continuous and devoted service. He was a former member of the Board of Vinitors of William and Mary College.

He also was a trustee of the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges and a member of the board of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Educational Foundation.

He was a former president of the Appomattox Basin Industrial Development Corp. and headed a committee formed to back deepening of the James River Channel.

In addition, he was a former member of the Hospital Authority of the City of Petersburg, a member of the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, the Petersburg Kiwanis Club, and a director of the Country Club of Petersburg.

He also served as a member of the executive committee, Virginia Manufacturers' Association, Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped; executive committee, Virginia Council on Health and Medical Care; director, Virginia Safety Association.

He was also a member of Virginia Study Committee of the Advisory Council on the Virginia Economy; member, American Chemical Society; fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science.
