MRS. BACKMAN IS FINALLY CALLED
Death Comes to Relief of Pioneer Lady After Long Illness

Mrs. Henry Backman passed away at her home south of Wynot last Friday, September 12, after an illness extending over many months. She had been gradually failing during the past year, and although everything possible was done for her relief, the summons finally came.

Mary Rupiper was born on June 21st, 1853, at Newvines, Iowa. She came to Nebraska with her parents when 16 years of age and at the age of 18 on April 23rd, 1871, she was united in marriage to Henry Backman at Menominee, where they continued to make their home for a number of years, later moving to the old homestead south of Wynot, where they have since continuously resided.

To this marriage thirteen children were born, two of whom passed away in infancy. The remaining children are Mrs. Henry Klug, Edward H., Louis J. and Jake Backman of Wynot; Mrs. A. T. Duman and Barney Backman of Hartington; Mrs. Andy Foulk and Josephine Backman of East Bow; Mrs. B. C. Pinkelman of Obert; Mrs. Melvin Rossenbach of Fremont; and Mrs. E. E. Wagers of Grand Island. She is also survived by her husband and one brother and one sister of Carroll, Iowa. There are also forty grandchildren.

Thus passes one more of the noble pioneer women of Cedar county. Mrs. Backman was widely known and respected for her splendid Christian character and her invariable kindness and hospitality among her neighbors and friends and she did her full part in building up the fine prosperous country that we enjoy today. Her husband and children have the sincere sympathy of all in their great bereavement.

The funeral was held from Sts. Phillip and James church Monday, September 15th, mass and funeral service being conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. J. Hunkeler. The funeral was attended by a vast concourse of old neighbors and friends from over northern Cedar county. Burial took place in the family lot at St. James cemetery.
