The eldest of six children, Gertrude was born on Farm #1 next to the Dutch border in the village of Alstatte, near the German town of Ahaus. Her father followed in his ancestor's footsteps, farming the same land as they had done since the mid 1400's.

As was the rest of her family, she was christened at Sankt Marien Katholische Kirche in Alstatte on 20 Jan 1809.

It was at Sankt Marien as well on 7 Nov 1826 at the age of 17 she married Johann Roetger Besseler, age 27. He lived on a neighboring farm and knew Gertrude her whole life. Together for 37 years, they had eleven children of which six lived until adulthood.

Gertrude's died 12 Mar 1861 and was buried 15 Mar at Sankt Marien.
