Jerry Elmer Maass, 63, of Saitama-Ken, Japan, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at his home.

Jerry, the son of Alma (Garrels) and Elmer Frank Maass, was born on June 29, 1950, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.

He attended Remsen-Union Community School, graduating in 1968. He continued his education at the University of Iowa, earning a teaching degree in mathematics.

On Dec. 2, 1978, Jerry was united in marriage to Miyoko Takayasu in Stockton, Calif.

For many years he taught English and math and later computer programming at the Kanda Institute of Foreign Languages in Tokyo, Japan.

During his retirement he enjoyed following the University of Iowa Hawkeyes teams, his beloved New York Yankees, gardening, reading, and doing crossword puzzles.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Miyoko, of Saitama-Ken, Japan; daughters, Julia and Monica Maass of Sacramento, Calif.; parents, Elmer and Alma Maass of Remsen, Iowa; brothers, Brian (Janell) Maass of Iowa City, Iowa, and Dean Maass of Remsen; sister, Pamela (Thomas) Jeneary of Le Mars; and numerous nieces, nephews and relatives.

According to his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service, but a private memorial will be held at the family farm in Remsen at a later date.
