SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Martin Gottfried Weiss was the Commandant of Dachau concentration camp in 1945 at the time of his arrest. He had previously served as the commandant of Neuengamme concentration camp from April 1940 until September 1942, when he took over as the commandant at Dachau. From there he was sent to the Majdanek death camp in Poland, from November 1943 until May 1944. His appointment at Majdanek came in the wake of the charges being filed against his predecessor, Hermann Florstedt, who was profiting personally from stealing from his victims, and was later executed by the SS. Weiss was promoted to Obersturmbannführer and in November, 1944, was assigned to AMT I where he was placed in charge of concentration camp inspections. This position was short-lived as he was sent back to Dachua in late April, 1945 as the commandant, Wilhelm Weister, had deserted.
Weiss and another SS officer were captured in Munich on April 29, 1945, wearing civilian clothes, by United States Army Corporal Henry Senger of the 292nd Field Artillery Observation Battalion. Weiss was tried at Dachau, in what is now known as the "Dachau Trials", held from November 15 – December 13, 1945. After being found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, Weiss was executed by hanging on 29 May 1946.
