Peter Muench Taken By Death

Peter Muench, 86, 5th Ave., well-known resident of Lewiston for the last 46 years, died at St. Joseph's hospital at 1:50 yesterday afternoon. He entered the hospital March 19, suffering from virus influenza, complicated by a severe asthmatic condition.

A native of Germany, born May 17, 1964, he came to the United States at the age of 17. For one year he lived at Cleveland, Ohio, and later in Nebraska, Chicago and Colorado. He arrived at Lewiston to permanently reside in 1905, although he had visited here as early as 1884.

His first work here was warehouse manager for the old J. Alexander Co. at the time one of the biggest operators in northern Idaho. Later he was employed as warehouseman for the Pacific Coast Elevator Co. as well as with other grain concerns as buyer.

Worked for Government

After his retirement from the grain business, Mr. Muench spent three years as an employee of the civilian conservation corps at a time the nation was emerging from the effects of the depression. He served several camps in the northern part of Idaho as canteen officer, librarian and postmaster. He was later in service as deputy state fire warden. He retired in 1947.

Mr. Muench belonged to the Masonic blue lodge at Lewiston, the Scottish Rite bodies and Calam temple of the Shrine. His wife, the former Bertha Millar, a member of a pioneer family of the city, died March 16, 1948.

Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. C. E. Stevens (Marie Muench) of Spokane, who arrived here with her husband yesterday afternoon; his foster grandson, Victor Millar, with whom Mr. Muench made his home at the 5th avenue address, and his stepson, Lawrence Millar, Spokane, who spent last weekend here.

The body is at Brower-Wann chapel with funeral arrangements pending.
