Richard C. 'Dick' Doten, of Windham
U.S. Army Veteran

Richard 'Dick' C. Doten, 71, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, in his home that he proudly built in Windham. He died after a short battle with cancer. At the time of his death he was surrounded with love by his wife Carole, his two daughters, Wendy and Pamela, his brother Squeak and his wife Judy.

Dick was born in Baileyville, the son of Harold and Jennie (Parker) Doten. He grew up in Portland and attended Portland schools. Dick married Carole Plummer on July 17, 1959.

Dick entered the U.S. Army in 1960 and was discharged in 1962. Dick built three of his homes and two lake cottages in his lifetime. Dick and Carole moved to Windham 35 years ago with their two daughters. Dick worked at JJ Nissen in Portland for 35 years as a mechanic foreman and retired 10 years ago. During his retirement, he found great enjoyment restoring, building and selling Harley Davidson motorcycles and he also was restoring a 1954 Ford truck. Dick enjoyed golfing and picking fiddleheads when he was not outside working on his motorcycles and truck. He also enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Dick loved teasing and joking with his family and friends. One of the biggest things his family will miss about him is his smile.

He was predeceased by his parents. Survivors include his wife Carole of 50 years; daughters, Wendy and husband Tom Riebe of Wisconsin, Pamela and husband Steve Wing of Gorham; brothers, Hal and wife Rita Doten of Freeport, Squeak and his wife Judy Doten of Westbrook; grandchildren, Nicole and husband Gene Davila of New Mexico, Nathan Pendexter of Wisconsin, Hunter and Shayla Wing of Gorham and Colt Riebe of Wisconsin; and a great-grandson, Noah Davila of New Mexico.
