Soldier's Medal Citation
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier's Medal to Sergeant Ralph Warren Maney (ASN: RA-11467546), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed hostile force: Sergeant Maney distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 October 1967 on board the U.S.N.S. WEIGEL, near Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, while serving as a member of Company C, 3d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). As he was coming on the ship's deck, Sergeant Maney observed a soldier on the ship's railing. He made a desperate attempt to keep the man from falling overboard; however, his attempt failed. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Maney immediately dived overboard to rescue the man who was in danger of losing his life by drowning. The water Sergeant Maney jumped into was clogged with debris and extremely oily. Sergeant Maney kept the other soldier afloat for approximately 15 minutes until a rescue boat reached them and took them aboard. Through his courage Sergeant Maney saved the life of another at the risk of his own. Sergeant Maney's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
