LODI-Marvin Thomas "Whitey" Oyen, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 in Lodi surrounded by his family. He was born on April 19, 1933 at the family farm on Smokey Hollow Road located on the Arlington Prairie, the only child of Frances and Glenn Oyen. Marvin married Kathleen Buchanan on June 4, 1955 at the Lodi United Methodist Church. He farmed with his father until he went into the Army. Marvin served his country from 1956 – 1962 and was stationed in Germany. Upon completion of his military service he returned to farming and continued farming the rest of his life. Marvin worked as a bus driver for the Lodi School District for 30 years where he won many awards including Bus Driver of the Year. He also worked for the Lodi Canning Co. Marvin served as an active member on the Lodi Fair Board, FFA Alumni, 4-H Leader, Past Master of the Lodi Valley Masonic Lodge and Past Patron for Queen Esther, Order of the Eastern Star.


Marvin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathy; his children, Tina (Kerry) Kurt, Beth Oyen, Bette (Mark) Kinderman and Bobbi Jo (Dave) Clark; grandchildren, Sheila (Andrew Smith) Kurt, Kyle Kurt, Kory (Melissa Teela-Kurt) Kurt, Leigh Ann Kurt, Anna and Claire Kinderman; great grandchildren, Tesa and Riley; brother-in-laws, David (Jean) Buchanan, Clarence Buchanan and Hugh (Lois) Buchanan; several nieces and a nephew and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Brenda Oyen in 1981.


Funeral Services will be held at LODI UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 130 Locust Street, Lodi, at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 25, 2014 with Reverend Julie Wilson presiding. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the HAMRE GUNDERSON FUNERAL HOME, 157 S. Main Street, Lodi, Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM with Masonic Services at 6:00 PM. Visitation will also be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. Memorial may be made to the Lodi Fair or to the Lodi United Methodist Church.
