John is known to have been born about 1696, he was a son of Michael Schenck, a Mennonite who was forced to leave Switzerland with his family about 1672. The family went to the German Palatinate, in the borderland between Switzerland and Germany. Michael is known to have been in Pennsylvania by 1718. If Michael emigrated to America before 1718, it stands to reason that his young sons came to America at the same time.

In 1720, John was listed as a carpenter. On June 4, 1734, he patented 150 acres in Lancaster Township on Conestoga Creek, next to Jacob Hochstetter and Peter Martin. He had probably been living there since 1718. On July 30, 1741, he warranted 197 acres in Manor Township, which was patented 20 days later by John Shank "Jr." On September 11, 1744, he wrote his will, giving 150 acres to sons Michael and Christian, and mentioning daughter Barbara. He died the same day.
