Civil War Veteran Passes Away
Robert Augustine, Pioneer Citizen Buried With Military Honors

Robert Augustine, for many years a respected resident of this community passed away at the home of his son, Samuel, at Milwaukee, following a very short illness. Several weeks ago he had visited his sons and daughters in this section, but returned to Milwaukee in poor health. His decline was rapid, death coming on Tuesday, and the remains were brought to Glidden for burial.

Mr. Augustine and his estimable family were among the first to take home steads in this neighborhood, and during the pioneer days made a home in the East Settlement which they developed into a very beautiful place. This was his home up to several years ago.

Robert Augustine was born in Saxony, Germany, and at an early age came to America. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and saw four years and seven months service in the Civil War. In the 80's he came to Glidden and this has since been his home up to the death of his wife three years ago, and following that he spent a year in New York City with his sons, later coming to Milwaukee.

The deceased was 79 years of age, and the father of four sons and four daughters, his son Louis residing here, Samuel in Milwaukee, and Jesse and Robert in New York, while his daughters are Mrs. Longes, of Ashland, Mrs. Pierrelee, of Mellen and Mrs. Ireland of Grand View, and one deceased.

The funeral was held from the Evangelical Church Thursday afternoon with Rev. Schneller officiating, and the remains were buried along side those of his wife. An escort of World War veterans accompanied the body to its last resting place.
