Kathryn was born in Danne, Germany. She came to America by herself at the age of 15. She worked as a cook in restaurants in both New York and Chicago, but disliked the big cities and moved to Iowa. While living in Dyersville, Iowa, she met John Lambert Knippling, and they were married February 12, 1884.

They were the parents of 9 children:
Elizabeth, Mary, Anna, Frank, Margaret, Bennard, Lambert, Joseph, and Henry.

The family came to Arlington Twp., Buffalo Co., SD in 1909.
