Born Bernard Edward Wessels to Bernard George Wessels and Cora F. Landers Wessels. Cora died from complications of childbirth and Bernard was adopted by his paternal aunt Rose H. (Wessels) Wessel and her husband John Henry Wessel.

OBITUARY:
BERNARD EDWARD WESSEL, of Charlestown, was born on February 7, 1929 and passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Floyd Memorial Hospital. He was a former dairy farmer and a retired employee of Kitchen Kompact in Jeffersonville. He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Wessel was preceded in death by one daughter, Rosemary Cantwell and one granddaughter, Jennifer Rider. He is survived by his wife, the former Flora Schafer; three daughters, Diane Cognata, Sellersburg; Malia Edmonds, Charlestown, and Paula Andersen, Louisville; one son, Timothy Wessel, Louisville; grandchildren, Stacy Jackson (Chris), Kelly Cantwell, and Chris Rider (Heela), and a future great grandson due in September.

Services were held on Wednesday, July 14 at St. Michael Catholic Church with burial in St. Michael Cemetery. Grayson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Cross Missions-East Africa, P.O. Box 543 Notre Dame, IN 46556 or St. Michaels Church.
