Labor Leader C.H. Nischwitz Dies at Age 74

  Funeral services for Clemens Henry Nischwitz, 74, of 228 West H. St., who died Saturday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital, Highland, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Fletcher Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wesley Bornemann of Eden United Church of Christ, officiating.
  Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
  Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today.  A Moose service will be at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
  Mr. Nischwitz was an area labor leader and lifelong resident of Edwardsville. He was born Jan. 6, 1900, a son of the late August and Ida Buhr Nischwitz. He was married to Beth Kovanda on April 4, 1925, in the Eden Church parsonage. His wife survives.
  Also surviving are a son, Clemens Nischwitz Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Glen (Betty) Phillips Jr., both of Edwardsville, sisters, Mrs. Harley Gwinn of Old Ripley and Mrs. Lavonne Davis of Poway, Calif., four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  Four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
  Mr. Nischwitz was a member of Edwardsville Moose Lodge 1561 and was secretary of the lodge for 44 years. He had achieved the "Pilgrims Degree," the highest degree attainable in the Moose organization.
  He was business agent for the Clerks Union Local 304 from 1932 to 1954. He had also held offices in Labor Union Local 179 and had helped organize the Bartenders and Waitresses Union Local 259 in 1935.

Pallbearers were Arthur Kniser, George Massa, Roy Dugger, Fred May, Henry Lienemann and Howard Knecht.
