German singer (baritone). Member of the famous Berlin vocal group "Comedian Harmonists", which gained international acclaim between 1928 and 1935. Because some of its members were either Jewish or of Jewish descent it became more and more difficult for the group to get engagements in Germany as the Nazis took power in 1933. Surviving World War II and the Holocaust, he immigrated to the United States and lived in California. Helater became the cantor of Temple Beth Israel in San Francisco. He was the last surviving member of the Comedian Harmonists.
