Mrs. Friederike Mehmken, beloved wife of Gerhard Mehmken, died at her home near Roscoe, Ia., November 22, and was buried November 25 in Morning Sun Cemetery. Marie Schreiter was born in Oldenburg, Germany, May 29, 1840, and was married to Gerhard Mehmken May 2, 1862. With her husband and the two younger children, Willie and Katie, she came to this country in April 1889, the two older sons, John and George, having come over the year before, while Fred followed in later years. The family made their home in Des Moines County, and have remained here to the present time. Mrs. Mehmken was a good Christian woman and died in the faith, having been a member of the Lutheran church for fifty-eight years. She was of a cheerful disposition, and always ready to help those in need of assistance. She will be missed and morned by all her close acquaintances, as well as the members of the imediate family. She is survived by the husband, now in his seventy-eighth year, who lives with his son, John, near Roscoe. Fred lives near Mediapolis, Willie near Yarmouth, George in Burlington and Katie at Daykin, Neb. Two sons and on daughter died in their infancy in the fatherland. There are six grandchildren.
