Gerald Gene Tillett Sr., 82, of Shelbyville, Tenn., died Tuesday Tuesday at Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Burial, with full military honors, in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. He was born March 3, 1923, in the Raus community to the late Joe Charles Tillett and Allie Ruth Roberts Tillett. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the European Theatre and participating in the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach. He also served in the Pacific Theatre and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars. He was involved in highway construction for over 35 years as one of the owners of Tillett Brothers Construction. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Adams Tillett; son and daughter-in-law, Gerald Jr. and Marikay Tillett of Huntsville; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Phillip Cooke of Shelbyville; three grandchildren, Julie Turner and husband, John, of Macon, Ga., Caroline Roeber and husband, Dana, of South Haven, Miss., and Cary Cooke of Shelbyville; two stepgrandchildren, Lauren Johnson and Evan Johnson of Huntsville; and five greatgrandchildren, Kathryn Turner, Abigail Turner, Ireland Roeber, Leyton Roeber and Ashlyn Cooke.
