William Michael "Mike" Emmert, 66 of Columbus, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mike had previously been employed by Weinantz Restaurant, Goodwill Industries, and Developmental Services. [Also custodian at Hauser High School for many years.]

Born Nov. 15, 1947 in Columbus, Mike was the son of William Martin and Imogene (Wilcoxen) Emmert.

He graduated from Hauser High School, class of 1966. He also graduated in 1967 from Broadcasters School in Milwaukee, Wis. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971. He served two tours in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam, during 1969 and 1970. He was honored at the Our Hospice We Honor Veterans Pinning Ceremony in 2013.

Mike was an avid sports fan and collector of sports memorabilia. He loved preparing sports trivia for major sporting events including the Indy 500 and NASCAR. His favorite teams were the Reds, Bears, Purdue Boilermakers, Hope Red Dogs [should be Red Devils] and the Hauser Jets. He loved horseshoes, Euchre and Texas Holdem and especially enjoyed taking his sweet time on his turn.

Mike loved to spoil his granddaughters and was very proud of them. His granddaughter Emily recently completed a project on her grandpa's service during the Vietnam War.

Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope. There will not be a service at the funeral home. Cremation is planned and a military memorial service with interment will be held at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison at a later date. The Rev. Nathan Greene will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be donated to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Survivors include his mother, Imogene Emmert of Columbus; children, Jennifer Faye Emmert (Brad Beach) of Columbus and Michael Andrew Emmert of Columbus; grandchildren, Emily Lynn Beach and Adilynn Grace Beach of Columbus; brothers, Martin Lee (Pamela) Emmert of El Paso, Texas and David Joe (Michelle) Emmert of Columbus; a sister, Anita Lynn (Daniel) Burton of Edinburgh; five nieces; two nephews; two great-nephews; the mother of his children, Jane Emmert Norman of Newbern and his cousin and good friend, Gene Edward Robertson of Hope.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, William Martin Emmert in 1998.
