British Army Lieutenant General. He is best remembered for his operations in the Mesopotamian campaign during World War I and for conquering Baghdad in 1917. His military service ran from 1883 until his death, and during that time he participated in the Second Boer War and World War I (Western Front, Gallipoli Campaign, and Mesopotamian Campaign. He was awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, and the Distinguished Service Order. While his forces were engaged at Ramadi and Tikrit, he became ill from cholera and died at the age of 53 and was interred at the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. A cenotaph in his honor resides at the Brompton Cemetery in London, England where his wife is interred.
