Kenneth Arnold Muhle died May 14, 2014 peacefully at his home in Longmont. He was 83 years old.
Ken was born on the family farm near Leigh, Nebraska on July 29, 1930 to Arnold D. and Millie W. (Hilbert) Muhle.
Ken farmed in his young life and graduated from high school at the age of 15. He left home at 16 to work at Boeing in Seattle, working on the B50, then going to work at Consolidated Vultee in Texas as an aircraft mechanic working on the B36 peacemaker. On both aircraft, he installed the electronics and bomb sights.
In March of 1950 Ken enlisted in the United States Army, launching a military career that spanned 40 years. He began as a Private and worked his way to an appointment as an officer. Ken was a maintenance officer and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel since Feb. 20, 1971. Much of his career was with the Army National Guard where he responded to many critical situations such as the Big Thompson flood, Participated in Project Rulison in Colo, Battalion Commander of Battery A HQ Battalion; directing personnel and equipment to help where needed. Ken was very proud that he was recognized with the prestigious Legion of Merit award, given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. He served as State Maintenance Officer and on the Adjutant General's staff. He retired on July 29, 1990.
After military retirement he went on to drive a truck for Golden Gravel and Krall and Bowes.
He said that driving a truck was his second favorite job next to being in the military.
Ken married Edna M. Varner on June 29, 1951 in Delta, CO and they made their home in Longmont since 1972.
He was a member of the Lutheran church, B.P.O. Elks 1055, National Military Officers Association, the National Guard Association of the U.S. and Colorado, The Retired Officers Association, AUSA (Association of the United States Army), National Rifle Association, and the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM.
Ken enjoyed gardening, being a handyman, hunting, bike riding, going on walks, bowling and woodworking. He built furniture and liked to fiddle and fix things around the house. He also enjoyed going to Blackhawk, Las Vegas, Laughlin, EPCOT space center and his Army retiree luncheons. He was a wonderful grandfather, who loved spending time with his late granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna, granddaughter Nikole Hoffmann, brother Donald Muhle and brother-in-law Ronald Hendricks.
Ken is survived by his son and daughter both of Longmont, two brothers both of Columbus, NE, three sisiters, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00pm Monday, May 19, 2014 with family present to greet friends, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Graveside service will be 11:00am Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver. Military honors by the United States Army. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to B.P.O.
