Ernst Klinkert came to the United States in 1866 and settled at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In Germany he had learned the brewing business, and when in 1873 he removed from Milwaukee to Racine. He founded and operated the E. C. Klinkert Brewery from 1878 until the Prohibition closed it in 1920.

He put up an architecturally significant hotel in Sturtevant named the Corliss and a majestic barn near Racine, Wisconsin to house his racehorses in the early 1900's that has the unique turrets, fancy trim and wrought-iron racehorse weather vanes.
