Joe Bill Miles, 86, of Elkin died Friday, May 23, 2014, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 13, 1928 in Surry County to William and Sadie Thompson Miles. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, superintendent, radio speaker, choir member and Gideon. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a former Elkin Police Officer and Surry County deputy sheriff for the "real" Sheriff Taylor, and plant manager for U.S. Fiber.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Redding Miles; his children, Linnea Miles (Jody Neff), William Dale Miles, and Cassie (Scott) Caudill; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in his death by his first wife, Edna; his parents; sisters, Biddy, Mary, Jane, Margaret and Mattie; and brothers, Bob, James, John, Sam and John Douglas.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, led by Dr. Danny Dodds, the Rev. Conrad Hatfield, and Dr. Scott Caudill. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Gum Orchard Cemetery with military honors presented by Yadkin VFW Post No. 10346 of the VFW.
The family will be at Johnson Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Monday.
